Chance The Rapper was honored with the Humanitarian Award at Sunday’s 2017 BET Awards. Check out the video below!

More than two hours into the star-studded ceremony, BET head Debra Lee said of the music star, “Honestly, I just love everything about him. He took his own path to the top of the charts and took that same creativity to give children the education they deserve… He knows this work isn’t for someone else to do later. It’s about what we can do now.” As Chance watched from the audience with his mom, Lee revealed the 24-year-old is the youngest to ever receive this award.

After a surprise video message from Michelle Obama, Chance took the stage to a standing ovation. “This is wildly overwhelming. I didn’t think it was going to be this crazy,” he confessed, revealing he didn’t prepare a speech so he could “speak from the heart.” He went on, “To receive something like this at my age, it feels a little bit…” At that point the crowd kept interrupting, prompting him to say, “I love black people, y’all! Please, gas me up!”

“It feels a little early to get something like this but my God doesn’t make mistakes,” he continued. “I like to think he’s putting this enormous pressure on me to see how I react.” Chance then discussed all that’s needed, from better Chicago education to justice across the country. He said he wants to be a better father, cousin, “more involved outside my community of Chicago.” Chance insisted, “Being 24 and something like this doesn’t feel deserved yet… I’m a good man. I’m gonna become a better man.”

BET began bestowing the Humanitarian Award in 2002, at the annual show’s second ceremony. The honor is given to a “celebrity philanthropist who donates their time and money to a charitable cause.” It was announced earlier this month that Chance (real name: Chancelor Johnathan Bennett) would be this year’s recipient. In choosing the rapper, the network said he has “consistently used his musical platform to support a number of impactful educational, social and political initiatives – positively impacting both local and national communities.”

A Chicago native, Chance has spoken candidly about confronting gun violence, and was part of President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative. He is also an advocate for education. Earlier this year, he pledged to donate $1 million to Chicago public schools. As the Humanitarian Award recipient, he joins such notable stars as Denzel Washington, Alicia Keys, the late Muhammad Ali, Dwyane Wade and last year’s honoree, Jesse Williams.
