Oklahoma State vs. TCU: Scores, highlights from Big 12 battle | NCAA Football Sport News

The Big 12 Conference is getting started early this season with a potential conference-deciding game between Oklahoma State and TCU.

The Cowboys come into this game ranked fourth nationally by averaging 54 points a game — a tough test for any defense to handle. Can TCU, which ranks 21st with 14.3 points allowed per game keep up? We’ll find out.

It’s easy to characterize this as a game between OSU’s offense and TCU’s defense, but it really should be a battle of the quarterbacks: Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph and TCU’s Kenny Hill will both need to be at the top of their games to come out on top in this one.

That shouldn’t be too hard: Rudolph not only has one of the best offensive supporting casts in football, but also ranks among the best quarterbacks in the country with 1,135 passing yards, a 72.3 completion percentage and 11 touchdowns to only one interception. Hill, meawhile, has eight touchdowns and two touchdowns this season.

This one should be an excellent offensive showcase. Follow along as Sporting News provides updates ad highlights (all times Eastern):

Third quarter:

5:58 p.m.: Called touchdown from 2 yards out by running back Sewo Olonilua. The play is under review but that would potentially make this game 34-17 with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Not good news for Oklahoma State.

5:55 p.m.: TCU driving again — Oklahoma State just can’t get off the field. Latest big play comes as Kenny Hill hits Jaelen Austin for a 43 yards to the Cowboys 4. Might be projecting, but it looks like another Horned Frogs score is up and coming.

5:48 p.m.: Oklahoma State scores its first touchdown since Rudolph’s 86-yard bomb early in the first quarter. He hits Dillon Stoner for a 14-yard touchdown to make the game 27-17.

5:45 p.m.: Mason Rudolph hits Marcell Ateman on passes of 27 and 11 yards to put the Cowboys in the TCU red zone. Must score here.

5:43 p.m.: Oklahoma State back at it from the 22. It’s definitely not too early to consider this a must-score situation.

5:38 p.m.: TCU just keeps chugging. Darius Anderson walks into the endzone with no difficulty whatsoever. Horned Frogs are up 27-10 and it’s starting to look dire in Stillwater.

5:35 p.m.: Wow, Mason Rudolph with an interception on the screen play — but an athletic play from Chris Bradley, who gives the Horned Frogs the ball at the Cowboys’ 42. TCU is in business.

5:33 p.m.: And we’re back! Oklahoma State already moving the ball early in the second half with a quick strike from Mason Rudolph to James Washington for 17 yards down to the 50. Of course, Rudolph is sacked after runing into his own lineman Teven Jenkins, who is now being helped off the field.

Second quarter: TCU 20, Oklahoma State 10

5:15 p.m.: Another telling stat from this one:

5:12 p.m.: Stats from the first half:

Total yards — TCU 214; Oklahoma State 142
Passing — TCU 16 of 25 (126 yards); Oklahoma State 6 of 14 (139 yards)
First down — TCU 18; Oklahoma State 5
Third downs — TCU 6 of 10; Oklahoma State 3 of 7
Penalties — TCU 0 for 0 yards; Oklahoma State six penalties for 57 yards

5:10 p.m.: Kenny Hill trips over his own lineman’s foot in the pocket to end the half. And TCU’s Gay Patterson is talking to his team on the field before taking them to the locker room, seems like. Oklahoma State limping toward their locker room.

5:09 p.m.: Absolutely abysmal time management from TCU, wasting 30-plus seconds with only a minute remaining. They do get the first down and mov the ball near the 50-yard line.

5:08 p.m.: Another nice play from the OK State defense, which hits Darius Anderson for a loss of 6 on TCU’s first play from scrimmage. Kenny Hill hits his receiver to make it a manageable third-and-6 from TCU’s own 35.

5:03 p.m.: Oklahoma State’s three ensuing plays: A loss of 4 yards from Justice Hill, a dropped pass from Marcell Ateman that would have put the Cowboys in field goal range and Mason Rudolph having to throw the ball away. The Cowboys are getting really flustered by this TCU defense.

5:02 p.m.: And Kenny Hill commits the first mistake of the play. He eyed his receiver all the way through his post route and way overthrew him. The pass is intercepted by Tre Flowers, giving the ball back to Oklahoma State at its own 24.

5 p.m.: TCU back at it. Kenny Hill hits Jalen Raegor in the flats, and Raegor puts a move on the defender to get the ball out to the TCU 48.

4:57 p.m.: Oklahoma State’s offense stalls again at the 12. Field goal by Matt Ammendola is good, at least. TCU still leading 20-10 with 4:46 remaining in the second quarter.

4:53 p.m.: Oklahoma State faces a fourth-and-3 situation after a bevy of big plays … and goes for it! Justice Hill converts with a big run for 12 yards all the way down to the TCU 14. Goes to show the Cowboys need to score a touchdown here. Hill has 56 yards on 12 carries in the first half.

4:50 p.m.: That’s a start. Rudolph hits receiver Jalen McCleskey for a 15-yard gainer, Justice Hill rushes for 16 and then Rudolph hits Marcell Ateman for another 11-yard gain. Cowboys going with the up-tempo offense right now.

4:48 p.m.: So far this game, Kenny Hill has hit 13 of 21 passes for 95 yards and a score while rushing four times for 14 yards. Mason Rudolph has completed 4 of 7 passes for 113 yards (86 of which came on one play) and a touchdown. He also has a fumble.

4:46 p.m.: Another score from TCU, who’s up 20-7 on the road against Oklahoma State. The latest one comes from Kenny Hill, who hits John Diarse for a 9-yard score. The Cowboys need a score soon if they want to be able to come back.

4:43 p.m.: Another first down for TCU … by way of penalty. Horned Frogs driving inside Cowboys territory.

4:37 p.m.: Things could ot be going worse right now for the Cowboys. Mason Rudolph had OK State driving in TCU territory byt has the ball knocked from behind loose by Ben Banogu. TCU takes over at their own 38.

4:30 p.m.: Of note: Oklahoma State has four penalties for 45 yards. That’s … not good.

4:28 p.m.: And right on cue, Darius Anderson scores on a 28-yard run right after the penalty.

4:27 p.m.: TCU nearly avoids disaster, recovering their own fumble. But Oklahoma State still gives the Horned Frogs a free 15 yards after the Cowboys got called for a facemask. Because of course.

First quarter: TCU 7, Oklahoma State 6

4:20 p.m.: An Oklahoma State D-lineman hit Rudolph well after the play. That’s a 15-yard penalty and the Horned Frogs are now on their own 45 yard line.

4:14 p.m.: Touchdown Oklahoma State. Mason Rudolph with a heck of a throw for 86 yards. All of a sudden the Cowboys lead, 7-6.

4:09 p.m.: TCU kicker Jonathan Song’s 31-yard field goal is good. TCU leads 6-0 in Stillwater.

4:05 p.m.: TCU converts on third-and-15. The drives continues, and the Horned Frogs are up to the OK State 13-yard line.

4:02 p.m.: So TCU won’t get the ball inside the 5, but the result of the penalty gives TCU the ball on Oklahoma State’s 31. Onward for the Horned Frogs.

3:56 p.m.: That whole punt play was a big mess for the Cowboys. Holding called against them, and returner Rodarius Williams touched the ball inside Oklahoma State’s own 5. The Cowboys are looking out of sorts early in this one.

3:54 p.m.: Kenny Hill hits Desmon Mond for a clutch third-down conversion to keep the drive alive, then avoids the sack by throwing it away while stood up by linebacker Calvin Bundage. Not a bad couple of plays for Hill.

3:53 p.m.: Oklahoma State’s drive stalls to start the game … TCU has a chance to make it a two-score game early. They’re driving at their 41 on second-and-10.

3:46 p.m.: Kenny Hill’s pass to Emanuel Porter bounces off his facemask in the end zone. Thankfully Jonathan Song tacks on three points for the Horned Frogs, who are up 3-0 against Oklahoma State to start the game.

3:42 p.m.: Horned Frogs’ drive is stalling in the red zone, forced to call a timeout deep in Okie State territory on third down.

3:40 p.m.: TCU’s Kenny Hill is 2 for 2 so far for 20 yards, TCU driving near the Cowboys’ red zone to start the game. Not a bad way to start for the Horned Frogs.

3:38 pm.: A thriller between Arkansas and Texas A&M has stopped the game from airing on ESPN, but this game is live on ESPNNEws and ESPN3. TCU takes over at its own 25 to start the game.
