On Thursday’s “The View,” the co-hosts reacted to the newly released police dashcam footage of Philando Castile’s fatal shooting. Watch the video below.

Officer Jeronimo Yanez, who shot and killed Castile during a July 2016 traffic stop, was acquitted by a jury last week of any wrongdoing. Castile’s death was live streamed by his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, but the dashboard footage now shows the events that led up to his shooting.

“Why put it out now?” Whoopi Goldberg asked on the morning talk show. Co-host and attorney Sunny Hostin explained, “It’s inappropriate to put it out before trial. It could effect the prospective jury pool.” She added, “It’s a public record and people were asking to see the evidence at trial.”

But Goldberg contended, “I don’t see why you would send this out. You know that this is volatile and you know that people are going to have questions about it.” Hostin then noted that Castile “did not even have to tell the officer that he had a firearm” and “did more than what was needed” during the situation, but still got shot. “I worry about my kids so much,” she added. “As the mother of a black boy, I’m trying to figure out why there is no way of responding as a black man during a traffic stop that is genuinely safe.”

Goldberg went on to note that Yanez said in his testimony Castile matched the description of a robbery suspect with a “wide-set nose,” adding, ” People of color tend to have wider noses! His hands were spread and he says I’m not going for the gun!” Hostin offered, “Close your eyes and imagine the occupants in that car being white. We would not be talking about this.”

For her part, Sara Haines couldn’t fathom why the jury decided to acquit Yanez based on the evidence show in the dashboard video. “What should [Castile] have done?” she asked. “He revealed he had a gun. I don’t know what else he could have done.” Joy Behar was also confused by the outcome, but Jedediah Bila elaborated, “The cop testified that he feared Castile was grabbing for the gun” and “pulling out a dark object.”

“My problem here is with police training,” Bila added. “If you take this job, you have to know you’re going to be put in these situations where you can’t jump to react.” Goldberg further noted, “There’s a 4-year-old sitting in the backseat,” adding, “We’re all in danger of people not being prepared for the job. There are great cops out there. We need to make sure that cops are trained so that they know that they don’t have to just spring into action like this.” She concluded, “You can’t be threatened just because somebody is black.” Watch the video below.
