The View Puerto Rico Governor

Ricardo Rossello, the governor of Puerto Rico, appeared on “The View” on Wednesday via satellite. He spoke about the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria as well as the help of Donald Trump and the federal government. Watch the video below.

As Gossip Cop has reported, Puerto Rico was heavily hit by last week’s hurricane, which followed Harvey in the Texas region and Irma in the Caribbean Florida. Many have criticized Trump for seemingly not supporting Puerto Rico as much as he did the other areas. But the president said this week that Rossello is so grateful for his help, and on the ABC talk show, he did indeed express gratitude. First, though, the governor started out by speaking about the island’s current condition.

“Well, right now, the whole island, the infrastructure is devastated. This hurricane has hit every corner of Puerto Rico. We have no energy grid. We have little access to water,” he said, adding, “But we’re working closely with the federal government to make sure we have all of our efforts ongoing.” He went on, “It is critical we get more help. We have limitations by being an island… Our ask is to continue this collaboration and make sure that we save people’s lives. And once we get past the emergency, get Puerto Rico on the path to rebuilding stronger than ever.” The most vulnerable, he said, are kids, the elderly and the sick. “This is why we’ve made a priority to deliver diesel fuel to hospitals and super shelters,” Rossello noted.

When asked about Trump’s belief that the U.S. government is doing a “great job” so far, the governor said, “Here’s the two components we need to consider: The president has been in contact with me almost on a daily basis. So he is aware of the devastation, and I thank him for issuing [pre-storm] emergency declarations… He has also given instructions to FEMA and other federal agencies to help Puerto Rico. So that effort is ongoing and it’s very good and it’s very effective. However, there are logistical threats we are facing… What we really need are some human resources, which we’ve requested.”

“I know it is a challenging situation,” Rossello acknowledged. “This is the most devastating event in the history of Puerto Rico… But we U.S. citizens who live in Puerto Rico, the proud U.S. citizens who live in Puerto Rico, want to work, want to deal with the emergency, but we are also looking forward for a special aid package from Congress.” He urged that the federal government “act quickly,” “treat Puerto Rico equally” and “avoid a humanitarian crisis in the United States.” Rossello futher said, going forward, Puerto Ricans “need to rethink how to bbuild, how to make our communities safer and how to prepare for these disasters.” Check out the video below.
